Title: UEFA CUP - Group stage - english talk
Post by: basketaris on 09 de October de 2007, 21:45
Hello from Thessaloniki, Greece!  :)

I am an ARIS fan and I am very happy my team will play against yours in the UEFA Cup. First of all, you should know that Braga is quite known in Greece, you are among the top 4-5 most famous teams of Portugal! We also used to have a player named Braga in the past!  :)

Let me say some things about my team. ARIS is among the most famous clubs of Greece, with 3 championships and 1 cup. We are mostly known for our numerous fans who support the team always and everywhere! The atmosphere in our stadium "Kleanthis Vikelidis" is going to be very difficult for you, as 20.000 and more ARIS fans will be standing over your players' head, with constant voice and other incredible shows! Here you can have a small idea:

In the previous stage, we eliminated Real Zaragoza and one of their players, Argentinian Diego Milito admitted that he would like to play for ARIS fans! He was totally amazed! If you search in YouTube "ARIS fans" you will find out why... Take a small picture:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3gZs9B9cBA

Concerning the team, we have a lot of Spanish players, such as Koke, Javito, Felipe, Calvo, a Portuguese one, Diogo Siston (ex-Brazilian) and some other Brazilians, such as Neto, Marco Aurelio, Ronaldo Guiaro, Anderson Costa. Our coach is Dusan Bajevic, the most successful coach in Greek football with 10 championships!

We will be happy to see you in Thessaloniki and welcome you to our home. It will be an honour to host a team from Portugal in Greece. Besides, we have beaten you twice in Euro 2004 and we like you very much!  :P :)

Nice talking to you!  :)

P.S. If you want to talk to other ARIS fans, please visit http://www.greeksoccer.com/forums/index.php?act=SF&s=&f=15. We will be happy to exchange opinions with you and help each other about our teams!

Hey basketaris!

Yeah you have a fabulous atmosphere in your stadium, it's a normal thing in Greek and Turkish stadiums. It's gonna be hard for us, but we already played on stadiums with such a great atmosphere like against Red Star in Belgrade where we tied 0-0 there, and also in Tottenham's stadium last year so our players already have experience playing in such places.

But i have to say it's a terrific atmosphere!

Welcome aboard basketaris!

I see that you do not let your players play football without paper...
You have some nice fans there, but if you have nice fans and bad players we win, if you have nice fans and good players we win again :D
I hope that it´s gonna be a great game, and Braga wins of course  :D

Thank you for your warm welcome!  :)
I think our group is one of the most interesting groups (not to say the most difficult) in UEFA Cup!
In order to make the beginning let me give you an idea of ARIS squad and how we play:
http://www.arisfc.gr/index.php?SCREEN=players (http://www.arisfc.gr/index.php?SCREEN=players)

-------------Chalkias--------------
---Papadopoulos----Ronaldo---
-Neto---------------------Aurelio-
-----------Nebegleras------------
-------------Garcia----------------
-----Calvo----Ivic----Felipe------
----------------Koke----------------

So, what is your formation/squad?

Our stadium is known as "Kleanthis Vikelidis" (pre-war legend of our team) or "Charilaou" (area of Thessaloniki, where the stadium is found). It can host 23.000 fans and it is considered to be one of the most football-ish stadiums Greece, as there is no empty space between the field and the stands. Here are some photos:

I remember your stadium from Euro 2004, where our National Team and the Spanish one had a 1:1 tie.  :)

Finally, you should know that in the previous UEFA Cup stage, we eliminated Real Zaragoza 2-2 on aggregate (1-0 home victory and 2-1 loss in Spain). Our goals were made by Papadopoulos in the 5th minute in Thessaloniki and Javito 1-1 in the 62nd minute in Zaragoza. It was one of the most epic qualifications of our modern history and we celebrated it with all our heart!  :)

So, if you want to know anything about ARIS (history, fans, city of Thessaloniki etc), please let me know and I will be glad to inform you!  :)

Welcome to our forum

Throwing papers before the kick-off is a typical ARIS fans trademark and it looks like a lot of Argentinian stadiums!
I share your opinion about nice fans/good players ( :)), but I have to say that we have great fans and great players!  :P
So, it's gonna be tough for you! May the best one win!  :)

Hello basketaris

It's a great pleasure to have someone from Greece here in our forum.
Many thanks for all the information about your team. All these things were unknown for me.

I'm sorry to complain, but I hope that SC Braga win in your country ;D

Baskatari, Nope, that match was in Oporto, played in Bessa (Boavista's Stadium).

Our stadium is a piece of art! 30.000 seats, has only 2 stands, on the sides of the pitch, liked by steel cables in the top, with a beautiful landscape behind one goal and a rock mountain behind the other.

We are playing our last games with the following squad:

                                             Dani
João Pereira ---- Paulo Jorge(cap) ---  Frechaut ---- Cesar Peixoto
                                     Andres Madrid
                       Vandinho
                                                         Jorginho
       Hussain                                                               Wender
                                            Linz

But we have some key players injured.

The normal team might be:

                                          Paulo Santos
João Pereira      Paulo Jorge(cap)     Rodriguez       Cesar Peixoto
                                         Andres Madrid
                       Vandinho
                                                         João Pinto
         Jorginho                                                                 Hussain
                                          Linz (or João Tomás)

But our coach changes the offensive players quite often so we don't have a fixed 11

aris has a few players that played here before, ronald garcia(ex-alverca), diogo siston(ex-santa clara), koke(ex-sporting), and u should know that they all left without making something positive.
ur last year star(paulo costa) didnt was happy in Portugal too, so i think that maybe our players are better than yours. but in the otherhand ur fans could make some difference. but as obvious i hope we bring a victory from greece! ;)

Well, you were right about Ronaldo, he used to play in Benfica!  ;)
Concerning the other players that played in Portugal, Koke is our top scorer, last year he made 10 goals and he is our beloved player (he even called himself an ARIS fan!), Ronald Garcia is our class defensive midfielder and Diogo Siston has recently improved his game and gradually plays better.

You asked me about the easy way getting to Thessaloniki. If you check at www.airtickets.gr, you can find out that there are cheap flights from Lisbon to Thessaloniki via Munich or Frankfurt and the prices are very friendly. I made a research: if you depart on December 5th and return on Decmeber 7th, you can spend no more than 263 euros, choosing Swiss (no taxes are included, add approx. 80 euros, I think).
Thessaloniki's airport is called "Macedonia" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makedonia_International_Airport) and it is located about 15 kms away from the town centre and 10-12 from the "Kleanthis Vikelidis" stadium. You can use public bus transportation (rout No78 or route No 78N for night hours) or taxi to get to the town. From the city centre to "Kleanthis Vikelidis" you can take route No10.

And here are some photos of Thessaloniki, the capital of Macedonia:

The White Tower, symbol of the town
(http://www2.hyper.gr/asstota/images/white_tower.jpg)

The statue of Alexander the Great, king of Macedonia
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a7/Ac_alexanderstatue.jpg/250px-Ac_alexanderstatue.jpg)

Aristotelous Square, the most famous place of the city with a lot of coffee shops and shops
(http://www.anesthesia.gr/misc/ekab/pics/aristotelous.jpg)

Sights you must see in Thessaloniki:
> Of course, the town centre with a lot of people in the streets, many cafeterias, bars, shops etc
> The remnants of the castle walls in the old town of Thessaloniki (incredible view of the Thermaikos Gulf)
> Kamara & Rotonda
> The Churches of St. Dimitrios and St. Sophia
> Byzantine and Archaelogical Museums
> The remnants of the Ancient Hippodrome...
...and many many other archaelogical sights. Thessaloniki is an "open musem" to explore... And after that, don't forget to drink a coffee next to the sea, with view to the White Tower and the Thermaikos Gulf!

Also, under no circumstances, DON'T MISS THE CHANCE TO TASTE THE FOOD!  ;D Thessaloniki is the CAPITAL of the greek delicious plates, but prepare as the food is more spicy than you think... ;) If you like fish, there are INCREDIBLE fish restaurants, with the traditional drink Ouzo. Also, check out the FAMOUS sweets of Thessaloniki (Trigona, Revani, Baklavas etc) which can be found in the innumerable candy shops and delicatessen stores!

Sights near Thessaloniki
> Vergina, the latest capital of the Ancient Macedonian kingdom, where is found the tomb of King Philippe (father of Alexander), about 70 kms from Thessaloniki
> Ancient Pella, the first capital of the Ancient Macedonia kingdom and birthplace of Alexander, about 50 kms from Thessaloniki
> Petralona, the place where the skeleton of the 1st Man -ever- was found, about 50 kms from Thessaloniki
> Edessa with the unique waterfalls in Greece, about 70 kms from Thessaloniki

That's pretty much what your options are, I hope you find these information useful! Don't hesitate to ask me anything you want to know! ;)

Best regards!  :)

It really is!  :) Everybody consider Thessaloniki as one of the most beautiful cities in Greece! The climate is very good, the people are very warm, although very anxious! Walking in the streets and having innumerable cafeterias/bars available to enjoy your coffee/drink 24 hours a day is a fantastic experience! Whoever among you has the opportunity to come here, he can verify it!  ;) And, of course, what I forgot to mention, is the numerous night clubs/bouzoukia (greek term for live music centres...) that don't close until the first working hours (6 or 7 a.m.), that give you another option for the late hours!

Of course, the life style cost is an important factor for a visitor. In Thessaloniki (and in Greece generally) the euro currency has increased the expenses, indeed. However, there are SO many options in my city that you won't face any problem! You can eat/drink and not spend a lot of money. Of course, it depends on how much money you are able to afford and how much time you will stay...

For example, I give you an average price for some basic products:

1) small water bottle --> 0.50 euros
2) coffee in cafeteria downtown --> 3.00 ~ 4.00 euros
3) bread --> 0.70 euros
4) breakfast (e.g. a cheese pie) --> 1.00 euro
5) 0.33 L refreshments --> 1.00 euro
6) normal meal (per person - a dish of food+salad+beer) --> 10 euros

Concerning the shopping, you should know that Thessaloniki is the second biggest city of Greece, so the average price index is high. You can find either higher or lower prices, of course. There are many places where you can find the famous brands (for clothes, jewelery, accessories etc), but my personal advice is to take your time and check shops in the small streets of the city centre. You will find amazing stuff!

Finally, concerning the weather, you should know that the climate in Greece is mediterranean. That means quite high temperatures in winter and VERY hot weather in Summer. However, the humidity, because of the sea, is very high in Thessaloniki and you certainly need a jacket or a coat at night. During the rest of the day, sometimes you may find yourself wearing a sleaveless T-shirt and not feel cold at all, even in December! Normally, you won't need more than a simple winter shirt. For example, last year on 5 / 6 / 7 December, we had an average of 7 °C / 8 °C / 8 °C  , while the highest temperature reached even the 13 ~ 15 °C .

OK, in Thessaloniki we have also cheaper coffees, but in NO way the price is so low... I can assure you that, if you want to sit and have a coffee, you won't find it cheaper than 2,5 euros... So, take your measures!  ;)

Maybe that's why they call Thessaloniki "capital of coffee": a lot of cafeterias, a lot of sun, view to the sea and of course, all that comes at a cost: 4 euros!  ;D

Wow!!  :o Bread 0,11 euros?
You are driving me crazy! (or maybe I am the one who will drive you crazy... ::))
I wish we had your low prices!
So, after a little comparison, I can tell you with certainty that life style in Greece is very expensive, compared to your life in Portugal...  :'(

By the way, price tickets for away fans vary from 20 to 60 euros, don't expect lower cost. If you come a lot of fans, you will be placed in a certain gate of "Kleanthis Vikelidis" and you will probably pay 20 euros. But, in order to be sure, let's wait a little bit longer...

Good try but that is Spanish, not Portuguese!  ;)

Hi there,

I know Koke, Calvo and Ivic i think ... but isn`t Ronaldo the one that played in Benfica a few years ago???

Tell us about the easy way for us to go to Greece and see the game ...

If you guys want to visit another S.C.Braga Webpage i have a blog ... www.braga-sempre.blogspot.com (http://www.braga-sempre.blogspot.com)

Regards

Koke played in Sporting, but i think that he just has scored one goal ... Ronald Garcia in a bolivian player right? Ha played in a team called Alverca but he was very young when he played here ... I don`t remember any Diogo Siston?!?!?!? :-\

From Porto to Frankfurt we have really cheap flights ... like 50 euros the 2 filights ...

I`m just not sure about the best company to flight from frankfurt to Tessalonik?!?! ???

I`m living in the same house as a Greek guy and he told me that you have a quite nice team but he his supporter of Panathinaikos! ;)

During EURO2004, when Greece won the match that put them in the 1/4 final, Greece came to stay in Braga for about (maybe) a week, to the same place where Spain was before.
If Portugal had came to Braga (and if we had another goalkeeper), maybe we had won the European Championship!

I am really happy that you liked the photos of Thessaloniki! It's really a good opportunity for you to come and visit it. You are going to have a wonderful experience! I hope that many of you will have the chance of coming here! And for those of you that can't, you are welcome any time!

Alexbous, my compatriot, spoke Spanish so well, that even myself couldn't understand him!  :) I speak French and I must say that reading a sentence in Spanish/Portuguese reminds me a lot of French... So, perhaps it's a good opportunity now, to learn your language!  :D

QuoteBasketaris, you forgot to tell us the price of the most basic product for a football fan:BEER!!

Shame on me for forgetting it!  ;D
If you want to have a bottle of beer (e.g Heineken 0.5 L) in some bar in the centre of Thessaloniki, you should know that you are gonna pay 3.5 ~ 5 euros. That's the average... It's too expensive, even for us! The best solution is to get into a super-market, get yourself a package of 6 beers (0.33 L) and pay only 3.5 euros! That means 0.6 euros for each bottle... Make the comparison and see the difference...  ;)

Generally speaking, for a visitor like you that will stay no more than 2 days, it's worth spending something more, just to feel the experience of the intense night life of Thessaloniki! You won't regret it... But if you don't want to be overcharged, prefer to get your basic products from a supermarket. The prices are much lower...  ;)

Fellow greeks, welcome to our litle Braga supporters "backyard" !!
I must say I'm surprised with the friendly way you, Aris supporters, have been chating with us in our forum. Never been to Thessaloniki, but I know Greece quite well, and I can surely say that your "neighbours" from Athens are not as friendly and nice as you seem to be. Not even close... But well, people from Lisbon are also not like us (Braga end the rest of northern Portugal). I mean, we are a lot more warm, friendly and receptive to other poeple and foreigners in general. Probably, it's a disease of people living in the capitals  ;D :P
Once again, welcome to our forum, and wish you good luck to the group stage, except for matchday 4 of course  ;)

Title: Re: UEFA CUP - Group stage - english talk
Post by: basketaris on 11 de October de 2007, 22:16
If ARIS wants to qualify and since it's the first home game, we must beat you, guys...  ;)
Of course, most people are happy that we avoided home games against Bayern and Bolton, but I thing there is no such dangerous thing as to underestimate ambitious and experienced teams like yours and Red Star's. Personally speaking, ARIS has the advantage of the home game (fans, atmosphere etc) and will try from the 1st minute to score. Our defence is the strong part of the team, as young "rock" Papadopoulos and experienced Ronaldo create a magnificent duo, combined with talented and fast wing backs, as Aurelio (left) and Neto (right), both Brazilians. In my opinion, it's either ARIS victory or a draw. The factor that will determine it is wheter ARIS manages to turn our opportunities into goals.  :-\

Braga has increased its reputation here, in Greece, over the last 3-4 years and many Greeks recognize you as the 3rd power in Portugal, along with Boavista. Naturally, I haven't watched many games of you live on TV, but through the weekly reports I see that you are a very good team that causes many troubles. The negative thing for you is that we have a lot of players that are aware of your football (Ronaldo-Nacho Garcia-Siston-Koke) and their playing style is similar to yours.  ;)

I don't know the situation we are both going to be on December 6th, there is too much road to cover until then... We 'll see...  ::)

Greetings!

P.S. ARIS qualified today to the best 16 teams of the Greek Cup, beating Division B team Agios Dimitrios, in Athens, 0-1. The winning goal was scored by our midfielder Kyrgiakos on the 119' minute (last minute of the overtime). We were tired and performed bad, but we managed to qualify. Now, we have a 10-day break (Greek NT is playing) and then, on Sunday, 21/10, ARIS faces local rival Paok...

Today's line-up: Kelemen - Aurelio, Neto, Papadopoulos, Kouloucheris - Nebegleras, Prittas, Siston, Javito - Koke, Papazoglou. From the bench: Kyrgiakos, Felipe, Gougoulias.

Basketaris has covered me completelly with his answer. We don't underestmate you at all and it is obvious that in football anything can happen, but it would be very hard for you to win in Thessaloniki. I emphasize that ARIS is unbeaten for 40 years in all european competitions in home matches. And many important rivals have passed from here and the best they got was a tie:

1969-70.......Aris-Cagliary 1-1 Spyridon---Martirantota
1970-71.......Aris-Chelsea 1-1 Alexiadis---Hutchinson
1974-75.......Aris-Rapid Wien 1-0 Alexiadis
1979-80.......Aris-Benfica 3-1 Kouis,Pallas,Zindros---Reinaldo
1979-80.......Aris-Perugia 1-1 Semertzidis---Rossi
1979-80.......Aris-St Ettiene 3-3 Zindros,Pallas,Venos---Larios,Jimaco,Rep
1980-81.......Aris-Ipswich Town 3-1 Tsirimokos,Drambis,Zelelidis---Gates
1981-82.......Aris-Sliema Wand. 4-0 Panov,Kouis 3
1981-82.......Aris-Lokeren 1-1 Kouis--Elkjier
1994-95.......Aris-Hapoel Ber Seva 3-1 Sapountzis 2,Ivan Santos---Gusev

Yeah, it was great match and I was lucky to be in our stadium to watch it! We won 3-1 and then we had to play in Portugal. We were losing 2-0 and we scored a goal at the last minutes (2-1), so we advanced to the next stage...

I would like to say that this is the most friendly football fans forum I have ever been! Thank you for your kindness!

Thank you! I think you are very nice, too.
But, honestly, who do you think will win the match, Braga or Aris? Maybe a draw?...

1980-81.......Aris-Ipswich Town 3-1 Tsirimokos,Drambis,Zelelidis---Gates
1981-82.......Aris-Sliema Wand. 4-0 Panov,Kouis 3
1981-82.......Aris-Lokeren 1-1 Kouis--Elkjier
1994-95.......Aris-Hapoel Ber Seva 3-1 Sapountzis 2,Ivan Santos---Gusev
1994-95.......Aris-Katowice 1-0 Sapountzis
1999-00.......Aris-Servette 1-1 Mantzios---Petrov
1999-00.......Aris-Celta Vigo 2-2 Antrioli,Kuzeridis---Karpin 2
2003-04.......Aris-Zibru Cisinau 2-1 Koltsidas,Lazanas---Siselov
2003-04.......Aris-Perugia 1-1 N.Papadopoulos---Marjiota
2005-06.......Aris-Roma 0-0
2007-08.......Aris-Zaragoza 1-0 A.Papadopoulos
Well, you are unbeaten in forty years, and that are great news, 'cause Braga in the last few years is making history an beating records after records, so it will be proudly that we'll break your history ;) :P.

Good look with the other games (especially against red star), but unfortunately we will put an end to your record ;D ;)

Nice try pal! Thank you for it, we appreciate it!  ;)
But the Systran (or any other translator you used) mixed some things up!  :)
I know you used the words "fans" which the translator translates it to "ανεμιστήρες", which in greek means "air machines" (fan=machine used to cool a place...). I understand you perfectly, as I did the same mistake in Zaragoza's forum, where I translated "fans" to "ventiladores" and not "aficionados", which is the correct one!  ;D It happened the same thing with you!
Another mistake is that UEFA Cup was translated to "φλυτζάνι", which in greek refers to cup, the thing from which we drink water (the other sense of cup).
All the other stuff was great, though! It would be a pleasure for us, too, to host you in Thessaloniki! We will be delighted to meet you and welcome you to our city! And yes, we enjoy your website, thanks!  ;)

This i can awnser. The bread we're daily used to, is quit small and low wheight. Bigger and heavyer bread is much more expansive here as well.

Allways with Braga in red&white colours!

I tottaly agree with you, but what you see here as no paralel to what really happen's in our stadium, or in any other stadium of the portuguese league. I also think that portuguese and greek are very much alike from a social/cultural point of view, except that you tend to be more enthousiastic, while we prefer the good old portuguese nostalgia. That's why we don't cheer that much, nor aplaud that much, but there is one thing i can assure: we hate to loose just as much as you do, and nowone insults the referee the way we do...

Bolton fans on one of their forum are only preoccupied with Bayern as it is the biggest match in their history. Braga and Aris are the teams they think will finish in 4th and 5th places. They rate Red Star Belgrade as the second best team in the group????? How they can do this I dont know.... I think 2nd and 3rd place will be between Aris, Bolton and Braga with Red Star getting knocked out in the last game here in Braga..... Justice... They didnt deserve to beat us the last time and this time we'll put them out.

Here in Greece, we call the refs "crows", because of their fatal "claws", with which they slaughter our teams!  ;D

As for what Bolton fans say, don't worry, it's for the best! In Zaragoza forum, where I used to talk, they were giving us almost zero possibilities to go through... But here we are!!  ;)

I agree with you. I spent my holidays this summer in Greece (I didn't go to Thessaloniki maybe next time  :-\ or when Braga plays there ) and I liked your country, our mentality is in many things the same (for the good and the bad).

I hope that Braga and Aris could go throug the next round.
And what I desire most is to win against Red Star because last time we played they were "assholes" (sorry but I can't find an less offensive word to descrive them).

Good luck to all your other games   ;D

Bolton fans on one of their forum are only preoccupied with Bayern as it is the biggest match in their history. Braga and Aris are the teams they think will finish in 4th and 5th places. They rate Red Star Belgrade as the second best team in the group????? How they can do this I dont know.... I think 2nd and 3rd place will be between Aris, Bolton and Braga with Red Star getting knocked out in the last game here in Braga..... Justice... They didnt deserve to beat us the last time and this time we'll put them out.

Well...in the end they are the other European Champions of the group...historically they ARE the 2nd best team of the group by FAR. Of course, in terms of team value they are at our level at this moment or even at a lower level...we didn't beat them 2 years ago after the biggest football massacre ever...we failed at least 10 goal opportunities, with our goalkeeper making throw-ins on their side of the field.
Back then they had Stojkovic, Purovic and Zigic, so I think now they are weaker then us, but...then again, they are still historically big and that's what Bolton fans know about them.

I wish so ;D ;D

I would say ARIS and Braga to go to the next round and I don't care for the rest! I really do wish that you Portuguese brothers will do your best by winning as many matches as possible, except from the match in Thessaloniki  ;)

Greetings from Bolton!
Looking forward to the game - yes it's true that most attention is being paid by Bolton fans to the trips to Munich, for fairly obvious reasons.  But most people also realise that the home games will be crucial and certainly wont underestimate you lot.
Out of interest, are many Braga fans likely to travel to the game at Bolton?
Cheers

I don't think that many of us will be travelling to Bolton on Thursday !! Only a bunch of crazy supporters, and the VIP's that travel with the team ... Haven't you heard ? Mr Socrates, our PM is sticking it to us all ! There's a lot of unemployment and our wages can't be compared to the English standard ... do you know that the minimum wage in Portugal is 400 € ? ... the travel agent that promotes the flight charges 1000€, so ... unfortunately we're stuck here .But you lot are always welcome to come to Braga ... whenever you have a 3/4 day holiday, you can visit our friendly city and i bet you won't be disappointed .Cheers .

Hello from another BOLTON FAN ;)
We are not in a position to underestimate ANYONE as our current league position will testify :-\
The reason Bolton fans are pre occupied with Bayern and Red Star, is simply because these are the places we will be travelling to.
We know all about your area of Portugal from when we visited Guimaraes (soory to mention them!) 2 years ago, we found it a very beautiful area, and the people were friendly and helpful looked after us very well, i must say that Super Bock is amongst the best beers in the world ;D
Anyone from Aris and Braga planning on visiting Bolton at the Reebok stadium, will find the Bolton fans to be the most friendly fans in the English Premiership.
Feel free to visit this website for any info/football chat (click on the Europe section), but be warned - the humour is very "unusual" and you may get teased a little at first ;)

Still, i wish Bolton and Bolton's fans all the best, hoping that Braga, Aris and you guys get qualified, sending Bayern and Red Star to the place where they belong: out of the UEFA Cup! ;D

Although we are happy to be visiting Bayern Munich, we also wish we were visiting the beautiful cities of Braga and Thessaloniki. Information we have received from Red Star "fans" make it very clear that no-one will be welcome in their city, and  are very likely be attacked. For this reason alone, i hope that Red Star are eliminated from this group.

Sorry but this is nonsense, you can fly on Ryanair from Porto Tuesday night into Liverpool fly back on Saturday for 136.42 EUR. There is a coach to Manchester costing under 10 Euro and then the train to Bolton is about 3 Euro. You just need a cheap hotel for 4 night, no problem!

The fact is that our average standard of living can't be compared to yours. It is true that there are some cheaper options than the one jaimec was talking about. But even for people who could afford  those cheaper alternatives, they would need at least three days off. That is a bit difficult to manage for most working people.
So I am afraid not may of us will be coming to Bolton...

I am reasonably familiar with Portugal and accept that, although I haven't visited this year and have never been to Braga (yet). Bolton isn't a wealthy place either for the record (and alcohol costs more).

Getting to Macedonia for our first round game involved flying to Prague then to Bulgaria and a six hour coach journey to Skopje! This took 3 days and cost me about £500. That's a lot of time and money for anyone. Going to a UEFA game takes 3 days, I know that and saved up holidays from work (hence no Portugal trip). Spare a thought for the Macedonians who travelled to Bolton!

I can see why you wouldn't go to Sweden or Greece but if you want to go to a UEFA game outside of Portugal, Bolton is one of the easiest and cheapest places to get to from what I can see. It's a shame if only a few will travel. Benfica, Sporting and Porto always seem to have decent followings in Europe.

Greetings from Sunny but very cold Bolton!

Welcome to any Braga (and Aris) fans who choose to come to the Reebok Stadium.
Rightly or wrongly, many Bolton fans feel we have got the very best draw possible.
We feel that we can beat both Braga and Aris at home and get at least a point in Belgrade.
Bayern Munich will be very tough - but we are hoping to take between 3-5000 supporters for that match.
We'll probably take around 500 to Belgrade.

For the home games, Bolton MUST win, but with our season going from bad to worse, we are now bottom of the EPL and have NO manager! Our crowds have dwindled over the last few seasons (2 weeks ago we got 20,000 on against Chelsea, when a few years earlier we had 27,000). For any Braga (or Aris) fans travelling to Bolton - you will be very welcome, but do not expect too much from the stadium. Its a fantastic football arena - but with so many empty seats, the atmosphere will probably be very, very poor. If you do not bring any fans, the atmosphere will be even worse!

I probably don't need to tell you who our main player is - the one you need to stop. Nicolas Anelka WILL eventually leave Bolton for a much bigger club - but whilst he is playing for us, he is scoring goals!

For any of your supporters who are coming to the Reebok Stadium - please don't hesitate to ask for information - we will gladly tell you the places to go.

I read elsewhere that Bayern Munich is the biggest game in our history.
Hmmmm, you could be right..... its certainly more exciting than a trip to Old Trafford or the Emirates Stadium!

Bayern Munich are one of the giants of European football and I challenge any supporter who would not be excited at a trip to the Allianz Arena.

We are very new to European football..... our results below.....

2005/06 - UEFA Cup
Loko Plovdiv (H) W 2-1 (Diouf, Borgetti)
Loko Plovdiv (A) W 2-1 (og, Nolan)
Besiktas (A) D 1-1 (Borgetti)
Zenit St Petersburg (H) W 1-0 (Nolan)
Guimaraes (A) D 1-1 (Vaz Te)
Sevilla (H) D 1-1 (N'Gotty)
Marseilles (H) D 0-0
Marseilles (A) L 1-2 (Stelios)

2007/08 UEFA Cup
FK Rabotnicki (A) D 1-1 (Meite)
FK Rabotnicki (H) W 1-0 (Anelka)

As you can see, all our games have been very, very tight.

Yes, these are all the games Bolton have competed in European Competition.

We are a very old club that has a long tradition. We have played many, many years in the top division throughout our history. But when European football competition started, Bolton Wanderers had started to drop through the English leagues and we spent many years in the wilderness.

From 1964 until 2001 - we only played 4 seasons in the top division.

During the early 1990s we started to build a better, bigger club. Finally we reached the Premier League in 1995/6 for one season. We also played one season in 1997/8. Eventually, we got back into the Premier League in 2001 and have stayed there since.

We have NEVER won the English League, but have won the FA Cup 4 times (1923, 1926, 1929, 1958).

It is virtually impossible for a club like Bolton Wanderers to get into the Champions League. Only 4 or 5 teams have much chance in England. Therefore, the rest of the clubs fight to get into the UEFA Cup. This is a very exciting opportunity for the supporters. We have visited many of the 90+ grounds in England over and over again. So being able to follow our team in Europe and visit new countries & stadiums is something many of us enjoy immensely.

Welcome to all the Bolton and Aris supporters in the best forum in the world.

Said that i wish Braga at least can get a draw in both matches away. I really hope Bayern and specially the feckin wankers of Red Star get kicked out. I am glad that we will have them again at home and eventually to have the chance of kick their arses off. They are scum.
Like most of us here, is completly impossible for me to go to England. No money, no more holidays left and cant even take sick leave from work cos my boss will be at the match. ;D
So I wish the best of luck to our supporters that will be there. And answering to someone here, we dont really have many ex-pats living in England... maybe a few might turn up at the match though... Ricardo will! (lucky bastard! :-*)
And like we sang after the match against Hearts

I read yesterday, in a local newspaper, that the travel agent that's organizing the trip ( 1000€ a pop ) could only sell 2 ( TWO ) seats ... simply riddiculous .These crooks from  AGENCIA COSMOS are only interested in making money ( all at once i might say ) .

So ... I guess there will only be a handfull of us tomorrow night at Bolton .Hope that doesn''t stop the team from performing at their best ...

Good luck to Braga for the upcoming game, I hope you can get what you want!  ;)
I'll try to watch the game through Internet, I am very curious also about how Bolton will play, as I didn't see much against Arsenal.

I am glad Bolton fans entered the forum, it's nice to able to talk with opponent fans. What someone said about the cost of those European trips (he mentinoned going to FYROM), is absolutely true! Recently, our prices were announced too and the average cost of travelling to England for 3 days is approx. 750 euros!! While going to Munich is 550... If you consider the fact that we, ARIS fans, support the basketball team, equally passionately, you can realize how difficult it is to go everywhere. However, ARIS fans will manage to travel massively, about 3.000 in England on 29th November and about 7.000 or 8.000 in Germany, where lots of Greeks live there permanently...

Last Sunday, ARIS beat easily its local rival, Paok, 3-1, with 2 goals by Spanish bomber Sergio Koke and 1 goal by -familiar to you- Bolivian Roland Nacho Garcia. Below you can take a small taste of what happened on Sunday, in our stadium Kleanthis Vikelidis:

Basketaris - do you seriously expect to bring 3,000 fans to the Reebok Stadium?

If you want to discuss things with Bolton fans about UEFA Cup - visit here..... we still have a number of Macedonian visitors online from our trip to Skopje!

So where is the pre match watering hole?

Hmmm,it's a little tricky for away supporters to get in the  pubs around the stadium, for some reason a lot of them are "Home fans only" and ask to see your ticket for the game (to make sure it's in the home end)
Two pubs that do allow away fans are "Barnstormers" and the "Beehive" both within a 10 minute walk of the stadium. Even better, is if you can get out and about early and visit Bolton town centre - try "Weatherspoons" or "The Flying flute" here you will have no problem getting in the pubs, and you can get the train from Bolton to the Reebok (Horwich parkway station) a 15 minute journey . If you meet any Bolton fans they  will be friendly. Have a great time!

There was a bureaucratic problem  - his former club (Alianza Lima) refused to send his international certificate (money issues). Anyway a few days ago, FIFA issued a provisional one, so Baylón is able to play in national competitions - not in UEFA cup for now (deadline has passed). Maybe in a later stage, should we get there...

Yes, it's from the recent game against Paok. It took place last Sunday... I'm glad you liked it!  :) That's what happens in every ARIS home games! And that's why I said it would be worth visiting Salonica for our game!

Yes, I am seriously speaking!! First of all, we got 2.500 tickets for the game, but I can assure you we will be much more, since there are a lot of Greek and Cypriots living in England permanently or temporarily (universities etc...). ARIS has lots of fans, many of them travel everywhere our team plays! And, if ARIS beats Red Star on November 6th, then we will be even more coming to Bolton!!!  ;)

BRAGA FANS
Best places to drink are definitely in our town centre. We have one street called Bradshawgate with about 15-20 bars (pubs) on it. And from that there are other streets with many more bars.
Wetherspoons - cheap beer, but NO chicks! More old drunks!!
Trains run approx every 15 minutes to the stadium. Taxis are about £10-£12.
Nearer the stadium - the Beehive and Barnstormers are your best bet for a drink. They accept away supporters and you'll encounter no problems from Bolton fans. If you can get past the doormen - try Scotts or Harvester which are very close to the ground - but expect to be turned away.
You can usually purchase beer in the stadium, priced around £2.70 for a pint. Not sure if its available on UEFA games.

ARIS FANS
Look forward to you bringing 3000+, this will hopefully bring out the Bolton fans and we'll have a cracking atmosphere at the game. How much are your club selling tickets to you for this game?

ey tambem nao estamos no kosovo, nao temos muito dinheiro, mas fazemos opçoes, nao era impossivel comprar um bilhete, mas acho bem que nao se colabore com esta politica(ridicula) de preços.

our president thinks that a fan that pays his part every month and who had already paid his season ticket, should buy now an extra ticket for 20/25€, and the fans aren't happy with it, we think that's unfair, so many of us will stay at home, its a form to show our indignation for this injustice.

Not a good result for us, specially after Bolton had managed a draw in Munique. We will need at least a draw in Greece unless we beat Bayern at home,
Anyway, we had a very good display against Sporting last Sunday (3-0) and we are more confident we can beat any team. But no one expects a walk in the park. We know most greek teams are very difficult sides when they play at home. It wasn't a real surprise your win against Red Star - maybe we didn't expect such a goal difference but we know you scored in the last minutes of the game...

Apologies for not popping on here for the last few weeks. A lot happened at Bolton - Sammy Lee our manager was sacked and Gary Megson was appointed. It was a very disappointing appointment for Bolton supporters - who let the club know their feelings. However, we can do no more, so we have only one choice and that is to get behind Megson.

The game against Braga wasn't very good. Most Bolton fans felt that Braga should have had a penalty in the 2nd half. But after that decision wasn't given, Bolton should have won 2-0. Diouf made an instant impact when he came on as sub and scored. Davies hit the bar when he should have scored or even crossed. And then Braga equalised. Well done! It didn't do our chances of qualification any good at all.

Next stop was Munich. Around 4,000 Bolton fans travelled to Munich last week and we had a brilliant time. Lots of beer, beer, beer, beer and more beer! The German hosts were very civilised and hospitable and almost everyone had a great trip. As for the result - it was beyond our wildest dreams to get something from the game. Especially with so many players injured. But we scraped a 2-2 draw after Ribery was taken off - a very bad decision by Bayern.

Aris at the Reebok next and then we're all going to Belgrade.

We heard that the RSB hooligans caused much trouble in Greece. Is this so? And how did they treat the Bayern fans when they travelled to Belgrade?

Apologies accepted! 8)
I dont know about the Bayern fans in Belgrade but two seasons ago we played agaisnt them before the group fase and they are simply awful. Some friends, Braga supporters, went to Belgrade and they were advised by the police to not wear our football jerseys or scarfs on the streets because it wasnt safe. And when our supporters went to the stadium, escorted by the police, they had to get in to the stand throught the players access for safety reasons! Imagine! And here they were also the worst supporters ever. They came and left (thank God!) and insulted us during all the match. Even their goal keeper that plays for sporting lisbon now, at the end of the match came over to our supporters showing us the finger. Wanker! But now.... they are coming back here  ;D :P
Anyway, dont expect to be welcome. Be aware because it might be some trouble.
I was in their forum, again 2 years ago, and all they did was to insult and threat. I gave up going there and now dont even bother.
Up Macedonia!  ;)

Hey Basketaris, Alexbous and all greek fans over here...

I´m thinking of flying to Thessaloniki, to check out your great stadium atmosphere live, and..i hope, watch my team performing well   ;D
Can you pls give me your opinion on this doubts I have?  ::)

First, the hour of the match..I know it´s probably too early but is there any idea so far? I saw 21:45 somewhere.
Than the airport way to the stadium..is it difficult to get there, heavy traffic or so (the best flight would arrive at 17:45)
About the tickets..is your stadium usually full on these great  ;) games?
Finally....if you know somewhere to go out after the game (or even before) ...thursday nights...

Cheers!!
Efcharisto!

(another thing..are there good connections to Istanbul? i did intensive search, called the bus company KTEL but they can´t tell for sure how long it takes..."friendship train" would be a better choice?)

First of all, I am really glad at least one fan of Braga plans to come to Thessaloniki for the game!
Regarding the hour of the match, I really don't know when it will be, but normally ARIS UEFA matches in Greece start between 21:00 and 21:45.
If you arrive at 17:45 you will have plenty of time till going to the stadium. In the worst of cases, it is not more than 40-45min away (by car).
Normally the stadium is full, but still always you can find a ticket 2-3 hours before kick off. If you are 100% sure you will come, I can buy a ticket for you and you can join me and my friends (I could pick you up from the airport and we can go together to the stadium)
I suggest you to register to our forum (http://www.greeksoccer.com/forums/index.php?showforum=15), where most of the posts are in English and you can get more help or anything you wish during your stay in Thessaloniki.

Hello ArcticStunt!
Sorry for not being able to answer sooner... :(
Alexbous has pretty much answered all of your questions, so there is not need of repeating his words...  ;)
However, he hasn't said anything about the...interesting points you mentioned, such as nightlife! ;D
First of all, you should know that there are plenty of choices for you to enjoy yourself, according to your tastes: clubs, bars, pubs, restaurants etc... What I suggest, though, is to try to experience something that you won't be able to find in your home country, such as "bouzoukia"... There, you can enjoy your drink, next to singers who perform live and in front of people who dance on their tables!!  ;) It's surely a nice experience, you 'll remember for a lot of time...

As for the trip to Istanbul that you mentioned, there are daily -I think- buses, as well as trains, but in order to confirm that, check out these websites:
www.ktel-thes.gr > Buses
www.ose.gr > Trains

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask...  :)
It will be a really great pleasure to see you in Thessaloniki!!

P.S. Oh, and just to have an idea what it is to live a game among ARIS fans, take a look at the recent ARIS basketball game against AJ Milano, for the Euroleague competition...

Thanks a lot for your information Basketaris!

Aris fans surely know how to enjoy a match  :o
Those Armani suits seemed to be really out of place over there...

The nightlife description looks attractive as well  8) and i guess finding some of those hot cheerleaders in a night spot would be worth the whole trip  ::)

As for me I´ll have to make a last minute decision due to work obligations...

But a trip to your cool city will be just a matter of time  :)

I am really glad if I helped you with the info... As I said, ask me anything you want, I 'll answer the quickest possible...  ;)

We will be very happy to see as many fans of Braga as possible in the stadium next Thursday!!  :)

By the way, congrats for the result against Bayern! I don't know how the game evolved, but you managed to equalize, so that's important! On the other side, we were unlucky to get equalised in the 93rd minute of the game, against Bolton, in England...  :(

I 'll visit you daily, guys... Now that the game approaches, we can discuss a lot of things...
See you!

You´re most welcome around here! Always a pleasure!

We made a great game, lots of opportunities and high intensity! Bayern is a great team, no doubt about it, but we managed to make them pray for the ref´s final whistle, eheh!

As soon as the game highlights are available , i´ll put the link for you to have an ideia! ;)!

Well done to both Aris and Braga last night.

Bolton really underperformed in front of a very, very poor crowd. Our fans just don't seem interested in the home games, especially after we took 4,000 to Munich. Aris seemed much more up for it and their supporters were amazing. Many Bolton fans spent the game watching the Aris fans instead of the game!!! Great support and our police/stewards should be ashamed of themselves for diving into the Aris fans just before half-time.

Many Bolton fans were disappointed that players like Anelka and Diouf did not start the game. Its like our club is not taking the UEFA Cup serious. After such a good result in Munich, I thought we would go all out to beat Aris - but we didn't.

I think we HAVE to win in Belgrade next week now to have any chance of qualifying. But I don't think our club is bothered.

Big week for 4 teams in Group F.

Our trip to Belgrade was superb - and the result was truly amazing for us. Red Star are a very poor team and will not offer Braga a game.

But as it stands 4 teams can end up on 6 points now and it would be likely that goal difference would see Bolton eliminated.

If Braga wins by 2 goals - they qualify.
If Aris draw with Munich - both of them qualify.
If Aris lose and Braga win, then Braga go through.
If Aris and Braga win, then both of them go through and Bayern go out!

Many Bolton fans are worried that Aris and Bayern will play out a draw - which will see both teams qualify.
If that happens, and Braga win 2-1. Then Bolton and Braga will finish on 6 points with 5 for and 4 against.
I don't know which team then qualifies.

If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of all the group
matches, the following criteria will be applied to determine the rankings:
a) superior goal difference from all group matches played;
b) higher number of goals scored;
c) higher number of goals scored away;
d) higher number of wins;
e) higher number of away wins;
f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question,
as well as its association, over the previous five seasons

You qualify. You have 3 goals away, and Braga only 2.
But we'll win 2-0 against Red Star... I hope.

I notice Bayern have been doing poorly at home and drew 0-0 with Duisberg (bottom team in Bundesliga) recently. So Aris have a very good chance. Though, if all of Bayern's top players perform to the very best, the German team should win.

As for Braga and Red Star. I cannot see anything other than a Braga victory. Red Star may want to prove a point and try to get something from the group to avoid total embarrassment of having ZERO points. But unlikely.

We're hoping for a trip to Lisbon in the next round - Benfica or Sporting would be good!

Here are the teams you could end up playing if you finish 2nd or 3rd in the group.....

Marseille
Rosenborg
Werder Bremen
Rangers
Everton
Tottenham
Psv
Slavia prague
Villareal
Fiorentina
AEK
Spartak Moscow
Zurich
Leverkusen
Getafe
Panathinaikos
Athletico
Hamberg
Basel
Bordeaux

We had an incredible chance to score first and we didn't (Kahn saved it with his toe!). Afterwards Bayern scored two goals before HT and obviously we surrendered. Bayern has made a perfect game, I doubt they played that passionated and good against Bolton in Munich... What can we do, football is this shitty sometimes...

I never came in to congratulate you for your qualification!

Even a little too late, congrats guys, for both your draw in Thessaloniki and your qualification!  :)

Too bad you lost today vs Werder, if only the score was a little better, you could reverse it in Portugal! I hope, though, you will fight no matter what and who knows? You can do the miracle, I really wish it for you guys!

About us, we were beaten by our local rival on Sunday, Paok, 3-0, but the negative protagonist was the ref of the game who denied us a red card on Paok, in the 3rd minute (!) and 2 clear penalties in the first half! Guess what, he was rated almost perfect and he escaped punishment! However, the biggest issue is the killer hit of Georgiadis (ex-International player, present at the Euro 2004 with our NT), on our player Nikos KARABELAS.

The 35-year-old player of Paok did not respect his opponent and cold-bloodedly attempted to SMASH his KNEE! However, the ref of the game (who is a paok fan) didn't show him the red card, and instead, he ordered for throw-in, in favor of Paok! Not even a foul! Unbelievable!  :o

Please spread it to all your friends, in order to avoid such unprofessional acts in the future...

I really hope the best for you guys and I wish you have a good presence in the Portuguese league, as well as in the UEFA Cup!  ;)

  Thank's basketaris, for the support

Last night was very bad, now, only a miracle can save us  ;D (we are a very religious city) ;D

About your player, i hope he can back soon as possible, maybe next season?

the images.......
wowwwwwwwww :o

  that guy is crazy.

Here we have the same problem, some player's can do everything: discuss with the referee, break other player's legs, etc...

   Best off luck to ARIS
