Date: Sat 04 Aug 2007. Gary Haines reports from The Valley
Valley welcomes new-look Addicks
The Valley welcomes the class of 2007/08 for the first time this afternoon as the new-look Addicks entertain Portuguese side Sorting Braga.

No fewer than seven new faces were named in the starting line-up with goalkeeper Nicky Weaver and defenders Yassin Moutaouakil and Paddy McCarthy making their home bow.

Across the midfield Dean Sinclair and Jose Semedo were named in the engine room with Darren Ambrose and skipper Andy Reid providing the width.

And up front Svetoslav Todorov partnered Chris Iwelumo with two more new faces and one familiar returnee on the bench.

Chris Powell of course is well revered by the home faithful while Martin Christensen could showcase his skills at some point.

Towering centre-back Harry Worley of Chelsea is also in reserve, the youngster having arrived on trial from Stamford Bridge after impressing on loan at Doncaster Rovers last term.

Home fans will recognise the figure of Joao Pinto in the visitors line-up while Braga's boss Jorge Costa was a popular figure at The Valley when on loan from Porto.

Charlton: Weaver; Moutaouakil, Thatcher, McCarthy, Bougherra; Ambrose, Sinclair, Semedo, Reid; Todorov, Iwelumo.

Subs: Randolph, Diawara, Fortune, Powell, Worley, Christensen, Sam, Bent, Dickson.

Braga bag friendly win
Darren Ambrose struck his third goal of the season on Saturday but the Addicks slipped to their first defeat of the pre-season campaign.

The midfielder crashed home a terrific shot from the edge of the box after a free-kick was nudged into his path early in the second half - but the visitors had already established a two-goal lead by then.

An own goal from Ben Thatcher set the side managed by former Charlton cult hero Jorge Costa on their way in a sunny afternoon in SE7.

And Ambrose's fine strike was surpassed by a superb effort from Paulo Cesar Peixoto five minutes before the break, the left-back smashing home an unstoppable effort from 30 yards.

The Addicks were much improved after the break with Ambrose far more effective after moving inside but the slick-passing Portuguese side were always a threat.

Known as the Arsenalists after a former coach returned from a trip to Highbury hugely impressed at what he had seen, Braga's connections with the men from north London see them wear an identical red and white kit.

And although they were wearing sky blue on this afternoon some of their football would not have looked out of place at the Emirates Stadium.

After matching up in the second-half Charlton enjoyed some moments of promise with the new faces continuing to bed in ahead of the new season.

Yassin Moutaouakil again caught the eye with a whole-hearted display at right-back and Jose Semedo looked comfortable in the holding midfield role.

And with just seven days until the fight-back really begins, Pardew will surely be a step closer to a starting XI to face Scunthorpe back at The Valley.

No fewer than seven new faces were named in the starting line-up with goalkeeper Nicky Weaver and defenders Moutaouakil and Paddy McCarthy making their home bow.

Across the midfield Dean Sinclair and Semedo were named in the engine room with Ambrose and skipper Andy Reid providing the width.

And up front Svetoslav Todorov partnered Chris Iwelumo with two more new faces and one familiar returnee on the bench.

Chris Powell of course is well revered by the home faithful while Martin Christensen would likely get the chance to showcase his skills at some point.

Towering centre-back Harry Worley of Chelsea was also in reserve, the youngster having arrived on trial from Stamford Bridge after impressing on loan at Doncaster Rovers last term.

Home fans would also recognise the figure of Joao Pinto in the visitors line-up while Braga's boss Jorge Costa was a popular figure at The Valley when on loan from Porto.

Ambrose fired the first shot of the afternoon straight at Daniel Castro with five minutes on the clock, not seeing Sinclair hared in acres of space alongside him on the left.

At the other end Weaver fumbled the ball behind for a corner after Pinto's free-kick was met by a cute flick from Joao Tomas.

McCarthy stretched out a leg to make a good block from Pinto but it was the visitors that took the lead on 19 minutes.

The ball was worked out to the left by the visitors and Paulo Cesar Peixoto curled in a cross which bypassed its intended target Tomas only for Thatcher to head the ball into his own net at the far post.

Skipper Reid sliced an effort high and wide for the hosts midway through the half and Sinclair's low drive from similar range was pouched by Castro shortly afterwards.

A marauding burst out of defence from Madjid Bougherra just past the hour mark saw the centre-back surge into space on the left.

And his cross was not bad at all with Ambrose just unable to get the ball under control as he darted in to meet it.

Peixoto slalomed in from the left and thumped a rising shot over from the angle of the box and his corner was headed wide at the far post by Tomas before he made it 2-0 in spectacular fashion four minutes before the break.

Bougherra was penalised for high feet some 30 yards out and Nuno Frechaut Barreto nudged the ball to the left-back who smashed a superb drive beyond the diving Weaver.

Marcus Bent and Amdy Faye replaced Iwelumo and Sinclair at the break for the hosts and after some slick passing Pinto scarcely troubled Weaver in the early running.

And it was Bent that made an immediate impact as the Addicks pulled a goal back seven minutes in.

His driving run in from the right was ended by a cynical block from Paulo Jorge Soares Gomes right on the edge of the box.

And Reid touched the set-piece to Ambrose who crashed an unstoppable shot past the flying Castro. Game on.

With Bent occupying a berth wide on the right and Ambrose tucking inside, Pardew was matching the effective system of the visitors.

Wender cut in and fired wide for Braga in the 63rd minute and four minutes later McCarthy, Bougherra, Thatcher and Todorov made way for Worley, Jonathan Fortune, the ever-popular Powell and Lloyd Sam.

Wender latched on to a headed clearance from Powell soon afterwards and sent a half volley just wide of the diving Weaver's left upright.

Chris Dickson and Christensen replaced Reid and Ambrose for the closing 12 minutes and Wender dashed on to a hoisted pass from Roberto Brum Vallado to loft a volley over the advancing Weaver but off target.

Semedo's close range effort was deflected over the bar five minutes from time after a Sam corner caused a mini-scramble in the box.

Worley picked up the game's third yellow card after catching substitute Baylon, the Braga man emphasising his feelings about the challenge by rolling a good ten yards - and in a light-hearted moment Powell gave him a couple more for god luck.

Once the action resumed Pinto's fired his free-kick straight at Weaver after a lengthy discussion and there was little time for the hosts to launch a late rally as the match came to a close.

In the grand scheme of things a defeat means little in pre-season with form and formation more in the mind of boss Pardew.

And with that in mind the final piece of fine-tuning will take place on the training pitches next week with the serious business just a week away.
