"Tran's dream debut for Locos
Striker relishing fourth round tie

INVERURIE Locos' debut hero Tan-Thanh Tran took just over a minute to turn from a bag of nerves into a clinical striker.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a history-making first start for his new club, firing them to a dream Homecoming Scottish Cup fourth round clash with Motherwell.

A cool finish in 75 seconds capped a storybook day for Tran.

The German-born forward became the first player of Vietnamese descent to feature in the cup.

But despite his superb showing, Tran admits to being racked with nerves when Locos boss Dave Cormie named his side.

He said: "I did not expect to play in the starting eleven.

"We were outside, we did the warm-up and then the manager named the team.

"He said 'number 10, Thanh-Tan' and my heart started to beat twice as fast.

"I was so excited and was really looking forward to the game.

"It was a nice feeling coming out of the changing rooms and going on the pitch.

"Once it started I calmed down and was just concentrating on the game."

Tran clearly gathered his composure in an instant, as he made an immediate impact.

The former Hammer SPVG player latched on to a flick from Danny Milne and scored by coolly lifting the ball over Vale of Leithen keeper Leigh Gordon.

"It was my second touch, said Tran.

"There was a long ball forward and Danny played it with his head.

"I just had to score.''

Scottish Cup minnows Locos now welcome Premier League giants Motherwell to Harlaw Park on Saturday, January 10.

Tran is relishing the chance to take on a top flight side, having only experienced that thrill once before.

He said: "When I was in Germany I played against the Portuguese Premier League side Sporting Braga and that was a nice feeling.

"But it was just a friendly.

"Now we are facing Motherwell in the cup and that will be more exciting."

Inverurie's four-star performance helped banish the frustration they felt at having to face Vale on Saturday.

The East of Scotland League side feared they would not be able to raise a strong enough team on Monday night, when the game was originally scheduled.

With the tie already postponed four times, the Scottish Football Association stepped in and ordered it to be played at the weekend.

Locos' Highland League match against Wick was scrapped as a result.

But the disappointment at that decision was clearly forgotten among the jubilant scenes at full-time.

The home support was even more ecstatic when they celebrated TRAN'S chipped opener.

Tran would have added a second four minutes later had his header not been ruled offside.

But Inverurie doubled their advantage midway-through the first half as Mark Smith's header across goal left MILNE with a tap-in.

The dynamite duo then reversed their roles 10 minutes after the break.

Craig Ross found Milne and he set-up SMITH, who lashed the ball into the roof of Vale's net.

SMITH struck again shortly afterwards, this time after receiving a low Neil McLean cross.

Vale's misery was compounded when their bus broke down in Dundee on the way home.

The squad were stranded for two hours following engine failure.

Rather than wait for repairs to be carried out seven players paid £150 for a taxi home.
