Hello there my friends.
Firstly, I apologise, as I do not speak Portugese.
I am a Bolton Wanderers fan, who has followed the fortunes of Braga since we met in the UEFA cup 2 years ago. I enjoyed the style of football that Braga played and have enjoyed watching ever since. Now Braga has a great team and some exciting players at the club, Meyong, Alan and Viana to name a few.
Recently, ESPN was launched in England and we are now able to watch the Liga Sagres, which is great, as I get to see the Arsenalistas scoring and winning every week. However, I need your help.
I am desperate to find, and buy, the current SC Braga home jersey, but I can not find it available on any of the websites that I usually use, and cannot find it on the clubs official site www.scbraga.pt/ (http://www.scbraga.pt/). I would like to buy one, and promote my love for Braga in my own country with pride. Can anyone help me?
Hopefully we will meet again in UEFA Europa League one day, so I can travel to the Estadio AXA this time ;D
I look forward to hearing from you :)
Forca Braga!
Unfortunately the store's official site is not working well, but you can use this email the marketing department mkt@scbraga.pt of the club to order the product you want, and put your address and payment method that will be answered then, I suppose ...
But try anyway.
Aqui está mais uma prova como o Braga está rico... vejam como eles ignoram a venda de camisolas. Eu já tinha alertado para isto ainda outro dia e nem mais, já está aqui um exemplo.
Thanks a lot for your help, I thought there must be a problem, all I could find were Scarves! I have been in touch with Macron, the kit supplier, and had no e-mail back. Are there no main suppliers in Portugal, or third party websites such as subsidesports.com that sell the shirt? They all only seem to stock Benfica, Porto and Sporting!
I will give the email address a try, any other help would be brilliant.
I was hoping Braga would get a bit further in the Europa league so I may have got to see you in England again this year! Hopefully you will be in the Champions League next year though!

Unfortunately S.C.Braga is the only merchant of Braga jerseys.
Hello Lowerz,
First of all thank you for being a Braga fan ;D I hope you can see a Braga game soon ;D
As for jerseys unfortunatly Braga hasn't developed in to a modern club. Try to contact the marketing department (the e-mail is above) and I think they will find a way to send you a home jersey. If they don't answer you tell us something that we will try to find another way.
The away jersey this year is white just like Bolton Wanderers ;D I'm going to buy one for christmas (santas presents for me lol)
I will start to suport Bolton on the english premier league.
PS:Please continue to come to this forum, most people can read and write in English.
Hi there, thanks for your post, I can see that the best way to do this is to email the club directly and see where that gets me, i might get the white away kit then ;)
I will continue to keep posting and checking the forum, and keeping my fingers crossed for Braga every week :)
What do you guys think of Hugo Viana? I thought this was a great signing for you, he never really got a chance in the English Premier League with Newcastle but I have always been impressed with him when I saw him play.
I am not sure if our Portugese player Ricardo Vaz Te will be staying with Bolton for much longer, he has struggled to get into our team, although he has been impressive for Portugal under 21's side, and he will always be remembered for his great goal against Vitoria Guimarães!

Hugo Viana as been one of our top players, and now he is scoring too ;D
Vaz Te was a promissing player but I think he lacks on inteligence ;D But he will always be one of my favorite players because of that goal that you speak.. and everyone who scores to guimaraes is a nice guy lol.
How are you able to put ~~ over guimarães? I though english keyboards didn't have that "key"
Haha I pasted it from another website, we dont have that "key".
Yes, It was good to see Viana doing well, I hope he can continue.
Did you come over to England when we played against each other? At that time, we were having our worst spell for 10 years, and had just got rid of our manager. The team were playing some terrible football, and we were lucky to draw with Braga on the night. However, despite getting rid of our better players (Anelka, Diouf, Campo) we have managed to stay in the Premier League, and stabilise our position. I doubt that we will be back in the Europa League for a while yet though!
Braga, on the other hand appear to be getting better year after year, do you believe that the team can break the top 3 this season? From what I have seen of Sporting they look to be having a bad time of things.

Hi!
Altough you cannot get a Braga home jersey, I hope you to continue supporting our team in your country! We don't meet a supporter from another country every day! ;D ;D ;D
I also hope the site to be improved soon! It is a shame...
I also like your football team, Bolton Wanderers! Kevin Davies, Elmander, Cahill and Jaaskeleinen (I think it is the right way to write it) are very good players! I also like your coach since the he was on Nottingham Forest!
PS - You were very unlucky on Saturday afternoon against the Spurs!

Hey... Hey... That wasn't so unlucky!
Beware! There are some Spurs fans around... lol ;D ;D ;D
Yes - we were unlucky against Spurs, but they are a good side, so a draw is not too bad! Our new midfielder Lee Chung Yong looks a very exciting player.
I will continue to support Braga, shirt or no shirt ;D but hopefully I will get one soon.
The coach is not very popular with most of the Bolton support, because of his negative style of play, especially at home games, but hopefully the last few games he has started to be more positive. He is including more creative players in our team, and we are scoring more goals.
Elmander has not yet fulfilled his potential but we hope he will this season, as we paid a lot of money for him!
One simple end efective solution: Get some hollidays and travel to BRAGA! Sure you´ll be best welcomed!
Haha that would be brilliant, I must admit that Minho looks a lovely place. I have visited Portugal twice, both times to the Algarve, which is popular with English tourists, but maybe next time I will visit Braga and Porto further north.
Last time I was in Portugal was during the World Cup 2006, when England were knocked out of the competition on penalties by Portugal! The Portugese fans were brilliant and very friendly, and the celebrations in the streets afterwards were fantastic (although I didn't enjoy them so much at the time!)
Are tickets to Braga's matches easy to get? How much do they generally cost?

Hey Lowerz,
Sorry about the Portugal-England games history... seems that we've had a little bit more luck these last times... Euro'00, Euro'04 and WC'06 :)
About the tickets for the game, unfortunately, the stadium rarely fills its capacity so, there are always free seats. The price for one ticket varies depending on the team we are facing. For instance, the next home game the prices will be higher than average since we are playing Benfica (between 22 and 65€ for the public).
I think that you should find tickets from 10-15€ to the other games!
Thanks Andre.
10-15€ is very good value, all of the teams in the English Premier League charge at least double this amount for ALL games! It's a shame that the stadium does not fill it's capacity, Bolton have the same problem, with many big teams in the area such as Manchester United and Liverpool, as well as Manchester City, the big spenders!
I think Portugal have been the better team when we have met, and also our players have lost concentration such as Rooney getting a red card. Hopefully Portugal can get through a tough group by winning the last 2 games, starting with Hungary on Saturday ;)

It is a shame indeed! I do my part every home game. I have a season ticket and don't miss no game.
Braga shouldn't have that "big spender team" problem! This is a 200.000 people city in a 800.000 region. If half of this people supported SCB we would definitely be a big spender (at least in Portugal). Anyway, the stadium only has capacity for 30.000, and thats not even 1/5 of the city's population... (it reminds me of hoffenheim that has a the same capacity for a 5.000 people village and always fills the stadium... impressive).
The problem is that history says that only 3 teams can aspire for titles: Sporting CP, SL Benfica and FC Porto. Besides those 3, only Boavista in 2001 and Belenenses in the far far 40's (I think) won the championship... (curious or not Boavista is struggling to survive and plays on th 3th division... we think there's a conspiracy against outsiders... ::) )
What is frustrating for Braga supporters is that we have clear notion that most of the times those three teams are pushed or helped by the media... for example: at this moment Braga is the leader but all the head-titles refer to the great season Benfica is doing or to how terrible Sporting is playing... about braga!? one or two individual articles... but always sending the message that even though we are playing well... we will fall sooner or later. It's hard to maintain a winning mentality when everybody is expecting you to lose...
And as you may know the media works as free publicity for those clubs... now, braga... well we have the poor local newspaper... local radios, etc... and thats not enough to gather a big number of supporters.
I don´t know if you already answer that, but you had wrote that mail for the SCBraga marketing? And what they said?
Saudações Ultras
So, is the problem that the people of Braga support the other "Bigger" teams? (Porto, Benfica & Sporting) If so, this is very difficult to change, unless the team can break into the top 3. When watching "Portugol" which is the TV magazine show about the Portugese league, I notice that many of the teams (Naval, Rio Ave) often get less than 5000 supporters in their stadiums, which must make it almost impossible to compete.
I agree with you about the media coverage, most people in England would struggle to name more than 3 Portugese teams, and they would not know any of the players outside of those teams. ESPN are showing live matches, but they all involve the "Big 3" teams. The same problem is starting to happen in England, the top 6 teams fight for Champions League football with their wealthy owners and large support, and the more unfashionable teams all fight to survive in the Premier League, as many that go down to lower divisions do not come back and struggle to survive (Leeds Utd, Nottingham Forest) The top teams are helped by the fact that they always receive the most media coverage, the most televised games, and this makes them even wealthier, so the gap increases.
I really hope Braga can keep up their winning form, as a top 3 finish and Champions League qualification would earn them some more money and recognition across the european media platforms (similar to Wolfsburg, the current german champion).
What happened to Boavista? I remember their brief rise to the top of Portugese football, and I heard about their reported money problems, did they overspend on players and wages after their success?

5000? That would be great! Two years ago I went to see Beira-Mar - Braga and there was about 1000 people (500 from Braga) in a 30.000 people stadium... absolutely depressing!!!!
No wonder why 90% of our championship clubs struggle to pay the wages...
The cause is actually multiple!
First, the games are systematically not amusing... often the weaker teams play like Greece in Euro'04 (Big disgrace) always defending and expecting the opponent error... sometimes it works but most of the times it doesn't... and because they are so used to play like that the games normally are very tactic and often end with withdraws (commonly without goals).
Then the time the games are scheduled are outrageous sometimes... 9.30 in the night in a week day! Normally every weekend we play at different times (two weeks ago we actually played at 11h in the morning) depending on the TV transmissions.
I would spend days explaining all the reasons... what I'll tell you is that they don't realize that football is interesting when people actually go to the stadium to see it... and even the TV would gain viewers! For instance the only Portuguese games I see is the Braga games and on TV I see your Premier League games (in the middle of the afternoon normally and much more interesting).
QuoteI really hope Braga can keep up their winning form, as a top 3 finish and Champions League qualification would earn them some more money and recognition across the european media platforms (similar to Wolfsburg, the current german champion).
Unfortunately we have to finish leading to go directly to CL or second to go to the qualifying rounds.
QuoteWhat happened to Boavista? I remember their brief rise to the top of Portugese football, and I heard about their reported money problems, did they overspend on players and wages after their success?
Corruption... bad management... the usual...
Sorry- I forgot the champions league placings had changed for these new playoffs >:(
O.K I will send the club an email anyway to try and help you guys out ;D
I had noticed that the number of draws is high, and also that the games are low scoring, this can be a problem as the neutral fans want to watch exciting games on the TV, and the paying fans want to be entertained at the stadiums. This is another problem that Bolton have faced, our defensive style of play has caused the TV companies to ignore most of our games, we have not been shown live on television yet this season!
So - although it would not be good enough for Champions League football, would 3rd place this year be a big enough achievement for the people of Braga? Do you think it will help the team to develop and attract better players, and hopefully more supporters?
That can be the problem with the new stadiums that were built for Euro 2004, the atmosphere can be lost, as the capacity is too big for the club that plays there, whereas teams like C.D Nacional enjoy an intimidating home atmosphere in a smaller stadium, or so i am told!
Here's a post I made for a blog. It's already on SuperBraga bt I thought I'd post it here so you can read it. And Hi. I didnt see this. I'm Irish and I've lived in Braga for 7 years. Currently back in Dublin since June but hopefully going back soon...
Jorge Jesus and his playstation....
Last season Sporting Club de Braga's manager Jorge Jesus stated that the only way they would ever win the league would be on a Playstation. They had just been beaten by Benfica in Estadio da Luz 1-0 to an offside goal and had been denied two clear penalties. It was a bodyblow that Braga would not recover from and they ended up finishing 5th but gaining their sixth consecutive appearance in Europe, a feat few clubs in Portugal have equalled. Eduardo, Braga's goalkeeper, had gone 627 minutes until that fatal offside goal. Earlier in the season he had gone over 700 minutes in Europe only to be beaten by AC Milan's Ronaldinho in the 93rd minute of a UEFA cup game in Milan.
Ironically Jorge Jesus moved to Benfica in the off season in an extended contractual mess that involved 'alleged tapping' and ended up with Benfica paying Braga €700,000 and Jesus losing €300,000 season bonuses. He has been labelled "The Special Two" (after Mourinho - The Special One) by Manuel Machado, who manages Nacional, the team that finished one place ahead of Braga in the League. Their ongoing 'spat' will see them square up in a little over two weeks in the next round of the Portuguese league.
The media in Portugal suffers from verbal diarrhea. There are three big teams(Benfica, Porto and Sporting) and then there are the rest. Rarely does a team outside the so called 'Big 3' (Tres Grandes) get a meaningful mention other than the odd sideline. The 'Special Two' has jumped from the lower classes to the higher classes and the benfits are plain to see. Not a day goes by without a mention of his name. Mourinho may not be forgotten but due to Benfica's meteoric return to the echelons of greatness The 'Special Two' has become the media's favourite son. Headlines such as "Nobody will stop 'Benfica" have hyped the nation into believing that Porto's twenty year dominance may be at an end.
There is no doubt that Benfica are the biggest team in Portugal, the team with the most supporters, the team with most league wins, the team with the most 'associate' supporters in the world and there is no doubt that they've started this season with a bang. They've only dropped two points and have scored twenty four goals in seven games. It's clear for all to see that they have taken this league by storm and already raced three points ahead of Porto and an incredible seven points up on their city rivals Sporting. They have one of the highest goals per game ratios in Europe. They have won one game 8-1 only conceeding a goal in the last minute. The powerhouse that is Benfica has returned to take the crown that has elluded them for many years but is soon to be returned to it's rightful owner.
But, hold on a second(second being the correct word). The lower classes, or 'small clubs'(pequenas), are also shouting. The media ignore the cries. They fall on deaf ears. Benfica's five penalties in the first six games may seem over the top. After all, the referees have to do their jobs. That's what they are paid for. The steamroller that is Benfica takes no prisoners. It crushes all those who oppose its dominance. The 'Special Two' wants to take Mourinho's crown and become the new 'Special One'. If he stays more that 12 months it will be special indeed. Benfica go through managers so fast that the media have to mention each one 50 times a day so people can rmember who the current manager is. Benfica have had 10 managers in the last ten years.
But, hold on a second(Second is definitely the correct word). Benfica are 2nd in the league. 2nd? yes! 2nd! Sporting Clube de Braga are in 1st place. They are not only in 1st place. They have been there since day 1 when they were were the only team to win(incredibly the other seven games were all draws). Braga have the best defensive record in the league and have won all their seven games so far. They have beaten Sporting (away) and Porto (home), neither of whom Benfica have faced to date. The new rules, created by the football federation, dictated that none of the 'Big 3' (Grandes) could meet in the first three weeks of the season. Porto played Sporting in week six and won 1-0. Benfica will meet Sporting in week 11 and Porto in week 14 of the season. Week 15 marks the halfway point in the season.
So, The 'Special Two' play against his old foe Manuel Machado in the next game and then go to his former employers in Braga. Will Braga continue to surprise or will the Benfica steamroller continue to roll? For many it's no surprise. Braga have consistently improved over the past five years. They have considerably outfought Benfica in term of buying and selling players for profit over the past few years. Benfica had to sell percentages of many of their players this season to pay for their 25 million euro influx of stars(which does not include Barcelona's 14 million euro signing who was loaned to Benfica). Braga record by comparison is Mossoro, a €700,000 signing from Maritimo last year.
The 'Special Two' declared after Braga were uncerimoniously dumped from the new Europa League that no blame was to be assigned to him due to Braga's failure in Europe and his extended negotiations between himself, Benfica and Braga in June. But after Braga won their first six games he had to say that the majority of the team were his from the previous season. Such humilty!
Braga, if they manage to win their next game (away to Rio Ave), will equal the third greatest start in the history of the Portuguese league. After that it's Benfica and possibly an attempt on Sporting's record 11 wins at the start of a season. Will the steamroller crush the small club? Will the rabbit beat the tortoise? Or will the Pequenas(small ones) show that they have grown up and are ready to fight the big boys? Children who bully are usually bigger than their victims. Football teams who bully are usually richer than their adversaries. But when children grow up, just as football clubs grow, they end the bullying and start fighting back. The end is nigh?
Braga have beaten two title condenders in Porto and Sporting(who finished 1st and 2nd for the last three years). Benfica have yet to face up to any team of strength. Braga are two points clear of Benfica, five in front of Porto and ten in front of fourth placed Sporting. You make up your mind.
I'm sure the 'Special Two' has made up his mind. The rise to the top is long and difficult. The fall form grace is short and sharp. With already three managers having packed their bags already there are surely more to follow. Braga's manager Domingos Pacienca was under pressure after failing in the Europa League but his amazing run in the league has already secured his place in the history of the club. He's not 'too special' and is very humble in his approach. He manages from afar and leaves coaching to the coaches. He's a disciplinarian as Man Utd's on loan Rodrigo Possebom found out (He hasn't played since an outburst in the Europa League). And obviously he's a decent manager. Otherwise they wouldn;t be unbeaten and top of the league after seven games. And so the story continues...
There is no better time than now. The time to live is now. The time to dream is now. The time to imagine and forget the past is now. The time to shine is now. The time to bleed, sweat, and determine yourself for the things you want most is now.
Ok those of you who were asking about the e-mail, I have sent the following to the club
I live in England, but follow the progress of SC Braga with a keen interest, ever since my team (Bolton Wanderers) faced Braga in the UEFA Cup. I am interested in purchasing a Braga home jersey to help promote the club in England. However, i cannot find a link to purchase the shirt via the website, and i can not find the shirt on any of the major kit suppliers (Kitbag.com etc.)
Can you please help me by quoting me the price and telling me where I may purchase one?
Thank you in advance,
Paul
Nice to meet you Karl, do you work in Braga then? It looks a lovely place.
I have just read the Blog post now, fantastic writing, and I have to agree with you, i'm no expert but it looks as though from the outside that Braga is a well run club who have bought and sold astutely in the transfer market. While Benfica look very strong this year, Sporting look weak to me, and Porto have lost one of the best goalscorers in Europe in Lisandro. I see no reason why Braga can't give these giants a good game, they do not have the midweek distraction of Europe, and will surely have a decent base of points to build on, hopefully as much as 24 after the Rio Ave match. It would be fantastic for Portugese football, and fantastic for the people of Braga, I just hope that the crowds would start turning up to support such a good team.
Only time will tell I guess! Lets hope Jorge Jesus gets what he deserves!

Well I don´t know if it would be enough to attract more supporters, or at least "good" suporters, not only the ones that only come when the team is wining.
But in terms of recognition it would be a very good step, because it would solidify what has been done in previous years, and make the club even more attractive to good players, for instance, I don´t believe that Hugo Viana whould have come to Braga if our results in the previous championships weren´t good, as they were, and of course this is a circle, you attract good players, the team will give a better "show" in the field and practice a more attractive football, this will call more people to the stadium and eventually make more supports. The biggest problem of this all is the cost that such team would represent to the structure of the club, although players will be keen on coming to play for us they won´t give away a considerable part of their wage just to play here, and that´s the biggest problem, is the investment made in good players have the financial payback, not in terms of the sport, but in terms of the revenue??? Last year we have made a serious, and risky in my opinion, effort to make the team even more competitive, this year we did not sell many players, and the ones we did the deal wasn´t the best, maybe Orlando was but we are not sure of the terms of the deal, so our finances aren´t that good, and we cannot handle another year like that.
But we are growing, one step at the time, there are a lot of things that have to be done, even in the structure of the Club, make it more professional, this takes time to present results and we must be patient.

This is definitely true, if the club was to grow too quickly, the results could be disastrous, the club need to operate within what they can afford, which may mean that the growth has to be slow and steady, rather than bringing in a team of world beaters overnight. This is why loan deals are great, as there are no hefty transfer fee's attached, and also the team is not tied down with players on big wages and long contracts. it also means that if a player does not live up to his reputation (Possebon is a good example of this so far) then the club is not stuck paying the wages of an unwanted player.
I was working in Braga until June. Will be hopefully going back for the Benfica game at the end of e month and the derby gderby game in Guimaraes athe bdginning of November. The club is being built slowly and like all things mistakes are being made as the club grows. The merchandising side of the club is pretty much a disaster as they really dont know how to utilise such a big area that would bring in lots of money if it was done properly. The new jersey's weren't available until near the end of September. I know the company that supplied them got some big orders from big clubs and I dont know if its this or the fact that Braga have just taken their eye off the ball. I would be interested to hear if you get a reply back fom our mail. I wrote to them a month ago and still havent heard anything back yet.
I can't underestimate how large a jump the club hs taken compared to last season. At the half way point last season we only had 23 points. I wont complain about the ridiculous refereeing. Also having played two of the so called 'big 3' it takesa litle bit of pressure off. Those games obviously are huge hurdles that we have crossed already. You could imagine it would be equivalent of Bolton beating Man Utd and Liverpool in the first few games. Not exactly the same but you get my drift. Week 8 matches will be very decisive. Braga travel to Rio Ave and it's always a tough place to go for us. They knocked us out of the league cup there last season. Whereas Benfica play at home to Nacional. The managers of both teams have had an ongoing and very public dislike for each other over the past couple of seasons and even though Nacional haven't had a great start to the league they are well capable of getting apoint. Benfica on the other hand have played mostly understregth teams and without te referees giving them dodgy penalties they would be in 3rd place. They have lots of talented players but at times look very dodgy at the back. Ronaldo has nothing on these boys... They have mastered the dive.
Watched the game against spurs last week. Bolton played very well and were very unlucky not to get the full three points. The kind of game you remember at the end of the season when you wish you had those extra couple of points.
I saw Frank Worthington play in Dublin for Galway United against my local team St. Patrick's Athletic in the late 80's. He must have been about 41 or 42 at the time. The man's a legend. He played for about 20 different clubs.
Anyway Paul, I hope you keep posting and keep us up to date on your games too. Hopefully they might add an English thread here which would encourage more football fans like yourself to have their say. It's a good football forum. Its one of the few (If not the only) forum that has little or no crap going on in it. Most are administrated to kep opposing supporters out of heir forums. This is a free forum tha anyne can enter.
Thanks for joining in.
I suggested to the moderators to open a folder (or however it is called) to the english or foreign talk. Hopefully we'll have a appropriate space to discuss in english!
Nice one Andre!
For anybody who doesn't know who Frank Worthington was here's a video of his most famous goal.
Frank Worthington Super Goal! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0z_arXZ8nM#)
Thanks Andre that would be great, I know I am in the minority at the moment but hopefully more people will start taking an interest in Portugese football over here now that it is getting the coverage on television, something which we never had before.
I will keep you posted on the marketing email situation, I must admit that i was surprised at how far behind that side of the club was, and as for Benfica, it would seem that this is a huge game both for Braga to see how far they have advanced in 12 months, and for the return of the ex-manager.
As for Bolton, you probably saw us playing the best football we have played for 6 months, I just think that the manager has lost the fans now, and will struggle to get them back, but time will tell. As for Frank Worthington, a little before my time in terms of his playing career but I have met him at the Reebok along with a few of the ex players and they are a really good bunch, I wish I had the privilege of watching them play.
I will continue to post, as I have been welcomed on here by a lot of posters and have had some brilliant discussion which has really helped me pick up an understanding of the club. Hopefully I will get to see the team play in person soon! Would you recommend Guimaraes as one of the best matches to attend in terms of atmosphere with them being the local rivals?
Cheers
Paul

Yes, I would. It will probably be one of the best matches, attending to our rivalry and mutual hate (just kidding :P ).

Guimarães or Sporting. Since we won't play Porto for the league at home and Benfica is in a few weeks... besides I think SCB-Benfica is not a very good game to see... lots of tension and probably some stupid happenings... nothing serious though.
O SuperBraga está cada vez mais internacional... ;D

Not to worry Andre, I'll just have to keep this post going ;D haha
Yes, the player in the video is Frank Worthington, he played for 21 clubs!
Towards the end of his career he played for Galway, after this he spent the rest of his career at amateur teams in England.
So is Possebon still at Braga at the moment? I heard that he had a dispute with the coach after being substituted in the Europa League?
People liked the idea of a english talk in the forum... lets see if it goes forward!
Great, I didn't know the modest Galway had a legend playing there ;) good to know...
Hey Karl who do you support? Shamrocks? Bohemians? Are there any other teams in Dublin?
Well Possebon is a mistery... he was supposed to go back to ManUtd after that incident... but he never did... there isn't much information about his trainings and he's not been called for the team for the last games. I guess Braga has a contract with ManUtd and have to keep him here in the club until the end of the season but just put him aside until then... shame... he seemed to be a good player, but as soon as he arrived, he showed he's childish star atitude... now he'll shine in the bench :(
Yes, he looked to be a good player before his injury last season for Manchester Utd, and big things were expected of him on his loan move this year. I work as a football odds compiler for an online bookmaker, so I watch a lot of football live, and I go to watch Manchester Utd's reserve side often, as they play fairly close to where I live. He often looked like he was capable of an outburst when I watched him, showing a bad attitude even towards his team mates.
It looks like the Portugese teams prefer to bring in talent from the South American leagues, as the transfer fee's and wages are presumably lower, so I guess these players look at teams such as Braga as a stepping stone into the giant teams of Europe? Does this make the turnover of players in and out of the club very high? This is evident as many players that played in our UEFA match 2 years ago have now left. The players that started the game that still play for the club are as follows.
Joao Pereira, Alberto Rodriguez, Vandinho, Madrid
I suppose the best way for the "smaller" Portugese teams to operate is to bring these players in for small transfer fee's and then try to sell them for a big profit? This will make the club wealthier in the long term, but surely causes disruption in the team if the starting 11 constantly changes?

I think Possebon was the biggest "flop" this season.. He arrived like a young star with a big possibility of progression, the type of progression that he don't have in ManUtd, because here he has the possibility to play..
But I think he tought that the fact he came from ManUtd will gave him the titularity in our club. We have also very good players and instead of fight to a position in the inicial 11, he acted like a child and pouted with some decisions of our coach..
I see him play very few times to make an opinion of his real value, but in terms of attitude I'll give him zero... But his young, and still have time to became a good player, but in our principal team I don't believe..
Lucky for him, we have the Liga Intercalar. It´s a league for the least used players to better show their skills and have some competition to help the progression. It´s like a "B" team of Braga. I think in England you have also the same type of competition.
You ask which would be the best game to watch, I would say without any doubt S.C Braga - Vitória S.C. (Guimarães). The atmosphere is amazing. The best derby in Portugal. In any other derbys you can see easily 2 friends with different jerseys seating one next to the other supporting each one their teams. In this derby it's impossible... I'm not saying that this is positive or negative, but it helps to create an different atmosphere.

Yes you're totally right.
For instance, Braga this year didn't spend a dime in player transfers, and thats because our president assumed as primary objective to balance the budget and not to risk like in anterior seasons. He was really clever finding players like Possebon (which turned out not to be so good investment) and Hugo Viana for loan. Actually he was even wiser to make money selling Orlando Sá to Porto, Luis Aguiar to Dinamo and Cesar Peixoto to Benfica... all important players that he easily replaced!
Besides that we "got rid" of a few expensive players like Paulo Jorge and Frechaut, both in their 30's and earning well.
The bad side of this method is that we have tons of south american players! But they don't cost a cent on formation and are quite cheap.
You're also right about the disruption of the teams when you're always hiring and selling players... changing the starting 11... Benfica is prof of that... poor guys spent tons of money the last two decades in tons of players, just trying to find those galactics for them... and in my opinion that was the reason why they didn't win many trophies.
This is also the reason why I think our team is making a fantastic start on the league this year... only Hugo Viana wasn't in the team last year... all the rest were frequent players... Mossoró is playing a lot more often though, but also a lot better.

Without any doubt. This is the main problem of portuguese teams. The majority of portuguese clubs have money problems, and even if we wanted, we don't have money and neither actractive football to keep the best players in our league.. When spanish, english, italian or other football european teams offer a proposal to an player, they rarely say no. They go ta a better an wealthy (€€€) league.. And the portuguese teams also need money to survive so.. yes we try to buy some low-budget players in hope to find a "golden mine".
Of course this will make that we will never have an league to compete to other countries, but it's better that don't have any league at all.. ;) I hope a guy like Abromovich or the sultan of ManCity find interest in the portuguese league :D :D :D

I think this transfer policy is definitely the right thing to do, as the way the transfer market is going at the moment, buying players within Europe is too costly. For a team like Braga to do this would be disastrous to the wage budget of the club if they were to have a poor season whilst the team got familiar with playing together. I liked Cesar Peixoto but it appeared to me that his attitude wasn't always correct, am I right in thinking that his transfer to Benfica this summer wasn't so straightforward?
Pedro, we do have something smiliar to the Liga Intercalar, it was in our equivalent of this league that I have seen Possebon play most of his football. In this environment he looks to be one of the better players, but it is a big step up to first team football from here. Perhaps being left out of the team will make him more determined if he is to get another chance.
I agree with you Andre, about the team compared to last season at Braga, it is a lot more consistent, and works as a unit, rather than a team of individuals, a problem that Sporting may face now with players such as Veloso, who has had his head turned by links to Manchester City and Arsenal.
This is the problem that Braga may find if the performance continues. Within Portugal, the "Big 3" teams will want to sign Braga's best players, and also across Europe, teams from Spain and England may start taking an interest in players.
Will Meyong be playing for Cameroon in the African Nations Cup in January? This could raise his profile and alert some of the bigger teams to his skills, as he looks to be a great goalscorer. Who will replace him while he is away?

Don't say you like Cesar!!!! :D I actually didn't dislike the man, but we could notice that he wasn't here 100%... since he arrived, he was waiting for the opportunity to jump to a "better" club... he thought he did that going to Benfica I suppose.
His relationship with the supporters was never very good unfortunately... And I believe the way he left, not caring about braga's interests was reflection of that. He left almost the way Jesus left too... against the club will... and for a handful of 500€ bills :D

Sporting is facing that actually... and not only with Veloso! Vukcevic as well had some problems with the coach and club... and he is still playing. Besides that, Sporting did a really bad investment this and in the previous years... they have the best academy and keep losing great players such as Varela, Tiago Pinto and some other like Quaresma and Hugo Viana... they could be the portuguese Ajax.

Well we said the same thing last year. But we managed to keep the structure of the team selling only a few players. Besides Salvador, our president, has a really big mouth and he isn't very modest on the prices!

The problem of having our best players being coveted by the "big 3" or clubs from Spain (mainly), England or France is a natural consequence of our success.
The way to prevent or overcome this issue is not easy to find, we cannot face such competition, for our own sake we not even try to, so the way is to keep finding new players, try to maintain a core of 5/6 players with experience and fill the gaps with young good players that can represent a good revenue in the future. In my opinion this is a only way to grow, gradually, in a sustainable way, every once in a while we can dream to aim to a higher position, but I think that it is still a little bit early.
I dont want to seem pessimist, or even to give the idea that this is a flot, not at all, i believe that we have come so far and we are still going even further, just not as quickly as many would like, I think that we are building something today that will have its full expression in a near future, 10 years top, but only if we have a sustainable growth, if not we could be giving a step biggetr than the leg, i dont think that this expression exists in inglish but you do have a similar one, and if we are giving that big step we may fall like many clubs have before.

I understand the saying, I think in England we say "trying to run before you can walk". This is definitely true, the worst thing that could happen is that the club outgrows itself. However, Braga have a good base to build upon, a fantastic stadium, and a large population of potential supporters. They also have the attraction that european football is a fairly consistent achievement, which attracts players to the club.
Andre, I wouldn't say I liked Cesar, but I thought he was a very good footballer, however he was a player that could be replaced. If Braga could hold onto key players, such as the goalkeeper Eduardo, and then build the team around these players, then they will be very well placed to begin a period of growth over time, and slowly begin to catch the "Big 3". You mentioned the academy of Sporting, what facilities do Braga have? Do they have a strong youth team? This can be the key to success in the future, and also a great way of earning money, by selling some of these "wonderkids" with terms in the contract where Braga will benefit from future transfers. For example the club will receive 25% of the players next transfer fee, or an extra payment if he makes an international appearance for his country.

I think maybe it's a case for many South Americans who come to Europe and are frustrated with lack of playing time. I now Domingos Pacienca took no crap from him after his outburst in Sweden. Even had he been in top form it would have been hard to take the place of Vandinho wo has been in the form of his life over the past year.

The problem with Sporting is that most players want to leave. Moutinho, and Veloso being the main two.
The big three in Portugal have consistently been liked with Braga players but unlike say 6 or 7 years ago Braga will no longer sell them at cut price deals. Portuguese teams can no longer afford Braga's players unless the they are in their final year of their contracts and Braga deem it more economically viable to offload them due to wages or the likelihood of a player not extending his contract. Peixoto went because even though he was a half decent player he had less than ayear on his contract and would have become an enormous problem for the manager had he stayed.

Hey Karl who do you support? Shamrocks? Bohemians? Are there any other teams in Dublin?
My local team are St. Parick's Athletic. For the last couple of years they had a CEO who was worth over 50million but because of te crisis and stock exchange crash he pulled out and the team returned to a semi professional level. It's also because of he ew rules here whereby your club wage bill has to be less tham 75% of income from gate receipts. Bohemians on the other hand could face relegation because they have a huge wage bill and may end up as champions and also get relelgated in the same season. I happened to Selbourne a few years ao because of financial rregularities. They wonthe league and were relegated.

At this moment Braga doesn't have the greatest conditions for formation. But it is one of the goals of the actual president for his term to build a academy! They are actually dealing with the city government about the place where to build it... funding... etc...
However the investment on formation has grown these last years and we started to offer our formation players for loan and we are actually educating future stars.
You may know Tiago the Portuguese midfielder was formed in braga. Eduardo as well. At this moment there's one potential Israeli star in our reserve team who it's said should be playing for the 1st team (however he can't because of the visa or something... maybe next season...)
Congratulations on the article Karl, it makes very good reading I hope it reaches a wider audience and gets Braga some of the recognition they deserve.

It is good to hear about the plans for an academy, I hope this can go ahead, as this would be the first step to catching up to the opposition. Keeping players at the academy is a different problem! But with the new FIFA crackdown (during which Chelsea have famously suffered a transfer ban) the power now lies with the club that is developing the player. If Braga can do this, and bring their own players through, this will again save on transfer fee's and paying high wages to all players.
Hopefully the catchment area for such an academy would be quite high, with Minho being a large region of Portugal, esepcially if Braga could make the club more appealing to youngsters than their other local rivals.

Yes at least a third of portuguese population lives in the north... we'd have Porto's competition for the youngsters but I thing the secret lies on hiring many really good scouts.
Good luck to Portugal today everybody ;D
I will be looking out for the result.

Still, I don't like this portuguese tactic... too weird...
Its always great to see theres a bunch of people abroad following Braga and the portuguese championship.
Best of luck to Bolton and hope someday we might meet again in a competition. :D
Agreed Maria! It might be a little while seeing as the clubs are going in opposite directions though! :)
